Asheldham

I caught my PB of 21lb 2oz from Asheldham on the 8th March 2009.  My fisher buddy Bill Millar and I decided to do a 48hr session over Asheldham from the 6th to 8th March.  Had this on the 2nd night after blanking the first. Received some excellent guidance from Bayliff Jim which lead to me pulling this one out. He advised that its been a long time since a 20 came out of that water.

Etang des Landes (supporter of the Chairman's Carp Cup)

50lb 8oz

The first winners of the Chairmans Carp Cup prize and now regular visitors to Etang des Landes, Gary Reeve and Simon Pitt had a great week.  The "dynamic duo's" haul included seven fish between 30 - 35lbs, eleven fish between 35 - 40lbs and was topped off by this new PB and new lake record mirror to Gary at 50lbs 8oz!

Mountnessing

Jake had quite a good session on Saturday 28th March, at the Mountnessing’s swan Lake, despite the weather that was thrown at us and a bit squelchy under foot. Jake caught six nice carp and three bream. All fish were caught on maze on a hair rig and feeder setup, all on all a good days fishing.

Laundry Lake Saturday 21/3/09

The good weather tempted me to have an afternoon session (about 4 hours) at Laundry Lake and I was rewarded with this 18lbs 8oz Mirror Carp caught float fishing in the margin.

Southminster

I have a catch report for the 17th and 18th march:

Me and my grandad fished Southminster, pit 6 today and yesterday (not overnight sadly!). Both days I fished two rods, one for roach and other small fish and one for carp. The float rod was set up with a heavy float to let me cast out and hold it still in the breeze and my carp rod was baited with a tiger nut popped up by a peice of cork. I fished the swim opposite the reeds and had countless roach on the float rod on both days! on the 17th I had one strong run but somehow the fish came off shortly after I struck. After seeing carp on the surface i switched to a surface set up and managed to catch a nice 8lb common off the surface at range. After returning to my swim I caught yet more silver fish before catching a nice 10lb common carrp to tiger nuts at the very last minute! On the 18th I had a similar session with a small knock as a fish splashed right over my hook bait, I can only assume it didnt get the hook but was spooked, and again i saw carp on the surface, this time in the margins under some trees. I tried in vain to catch them as they couldnt be persuaded to feed propperly. I eventually gave up with that, went back to tiger nuts on my original swim and had a nice run resulting in a steady fight from a 5-6lb carp which i didnt weigh. 20 minutes later, as i was packing up my first rod, the carp rod screamed off and another heavy fight resulting in a lovely 10.5lb common carp. Saved by the bell once again!

I can highly recommend southminster! Its worth the hour journey to get there and its a really secure and well kept complex and the bailiff is very friendly and does a good job! It's a shame that my camera doesnt cope well with the light but there you go!

Mountnessing

This was my first time at Mountnessing and we were on the Swan lake. Haven't been fishing for long only joined the Billericay club in December. For the first couple of hours me, my dad and my friend wasn't getting a sniff, but then a small bite came. I hauled my first fish in and weighed in at 11.3 pounds, it was quite a fast bite but none the less a big fish. About 3:30 in the afternoon we were starting to pack up our bags and head for the road when suddenly a gigantic jolt came from my rod and soon into another fish. When I finally got the beast in it weighed in at 16.7 pounds. A new personal best and I was pleased.

Southminster

Fished Southminster with my wife and daughter for two nights. Upon arrival all the pits were frozen, with pit one showing some signs of clear water. We set up on the beach, and proceeded to break a channel in the ice using a  marker lead.

I managed two commons, low doubles during the day on Saturday, and my wife Julie took a stunning mirror carp of 16lb 5oz just after midnight from an again frozen pit. All rods were brought in for the remainder of the night. the lake had thawed by 8 o’clock Sunday morning and I managed another two commons during the day.

All the fish fell to Essex Carp Baits JUICE boilies fished over matching feed pellet.

Rectory Ponds

Fished Rectory Ponds today, the weather was quite good, fished on the nearsde long bank with our backs to the toilets, started off on the float with casters, after about 5 minutes of spraying small amounts of casters i had one roach off the bottom, then I managed to cast out at some cruising carp with casters and had a 6lb carp (the one on the mat) had a few more roach and an 8lb carp on slowly sinking bread (the one im holding) overall it was a great day out and the other 2 anglers on the lake also caught reasonably well given the recent temperatures! Well recommended if you are struggling to catch this winter!!

Rectory Ponds

I am writing this to let you know about the fantastic days fishing I had this weekend when I took my nephew fishing over Little Easton lakes, I only joined him a week ago in the club for his birthday and set him up with a rod, reel and small bag of goodies.  We only arrived at the lake around 1pm as all lakes in the area had been frozen over all morning!

We fished for about 3hours and in that time he caught some fantastic fish! he had never been carp fishing before or cast a rod so it was a huge achivement especially at this time of year for him to reel in a 7lb beautilly scaled mirror on the first cast! this fell to a pop up cast to the far margin.

He then went on to catch another mirror of 7 1/2lb which came on ledgered sweetcorn and this put up a fantastic fight!

We then moved swim and in two casts caught a 9lb long lean looking common and a cracking looking mirror of 11 1/2lb!!! both again on a pop up.  This was his first trip and already he had caught a double figure carp which any angler would be over the moon to catch!  I must say that the fish in this lake are amoung the best looking I have ever seen!! and the lake is a lovely place to fish especially for beginners.  We will be back!

His name is Joshua Rennie and he is 9 years old.

R Roding

I caught this chub from Passingford Bridge, the 1st swim by the barb wire fence. It was caught on a lobworm with the tail cut and it weighed 5lb 2ozs. Ii used my carp landing net on which the horizontal section is a metre long which shows how long this fish was. I also had another rod with bread as bait but only had one  knock on it. On Tuesday
the 23rd dec about 4 swims away I had a 1lb 4ozs perch on lobworm again at about the same time (4:30 pm). In the winter I always fish into the evening as we are allowed on the water till 10pm.

I am new to this Fantastic Value Club.

But I am emailing you, to say how much fun, we all had at your Southminster pits, specially Pit 3 and 1.

I took my boys on our 3rd visit. Each time myself or my young boys have caught something.

What makes  these pits special, is that ALL of us have caught our 'PB' there.

My 13 year Billy, caught his 1st carp and his largest fish. A carp at 7lb.

My youngest, Charlie. Caught a carp at 4lb. He was so excited, wanted me to land it. I said, it's time to learn. Charlie and his older brother Billy, did a perfect catch.

Now the boys, live and breath fishing!

I also had a successful day, 2lb Tench, 4lb Carp, 7lb carp, and my PB a 13lb Carp. It may not mean much to some, but to share this day with my  boys, meant so much for me.

Julie, Pheobe and I fished from Thursday morning until Sunday lunchtime on Pit 6.

Very quiet all weekend, but the fishing was extremely good. 55 Carp in total.

Note Worthy catches, Phoebe had a 16lb 9oz Mirror and Julie had a new PB with a 20lb 4oz Leather on Saturday night. The amazing thing was it was the same fish that Phoebe had landed a 20lb 2oz 15 days previous to claim her PB. They have nick named the fish “the ladies leather”.

Great fishery, congratulations to Bill and his team.

Etang des Landes (supporter of the Chairman's Carp Cup)
f Steve Briggs and his wife Joan visited us for three days in June. They had just spent a week at Rainbow Lakes France, where Steve, after 35 years of carp fishing, had caught his two biggest fish ever. Here is Steve’s report on his visit here, published in the August edition of Carpworld.

Some time ago I’d spoken to a very pleasant lady called Mary Forster who, along with her husband Paul, owns a water called Etang des Landes up near Le Mans. During our conversations she had invited us to pop in and see them some time and as we were passing nearby, it seemed like the perfect time. Etang des Landes is situated well out in the countryside and the area reminded me very much of Limoges. The word “stunning” is one that is used a lot in carp fishing but our first view of the lake was simply that - stunning! It reminded me very much of an old English estate lake with huge maple, oak and pine trees that were hundreds of years old. The lake itself is about five acres in size and is very reminiscent of the top lake at Serreire.

Paul and Mary came over to greet us and show us around the place. Well it was, and is, lovely!

Mary cooked a fantastic meal and Paul opened a few very nice bottles of red and we sat on the terrace overlooking the lake and just enjoyed the whole evening. All the time I was watching the lake and I couldn’t believe how many fish were showing. Several were fizzing along the centre stretch but at regular intervals one or two would throw themselves out of the water. It actually got to midnight before we finally thought that we had better get set up. We were kindly offered one of the rooms they have for anglers and guests but I knew that I wanted to wake up in the bivvy looking out at the water.

Needless to say, because I was so tired I only managed to get a couple of rods out. Paul had pointed out a few areas to try and I literally just flicked a couple of single hookbaits out in the darkness. This time I went for the Solar Quench boilies for no other reason than they smell great and the carp love ‘em. I figures that slack lines would be best, to avoid spooking them if possible, and with that done, I collapsed on the bed for a good snooze.

It was just starting to get light when the indicator on the left rod pulled up tight and the line started to tick from the spool. It was lovely to hear a proper run again after the locked-up fishing which is the norm at Rainbow. In the silence of the early morning it was nice to be out on the platform with what felt like a decent carp on the end. I wasn’t rushing things, but the fish fought hard for quite a time before I finally had it beaten. As I thought, it was a good mirror of just over 30lb. a great way to start the day and it’s always special to catch the first fish from new water.

I was amazed at how active the fish were and as the sun climbed higher I could see several bubbling and, again, they were showing all over the lake. I suppose it made it appear easier than it was, but that is rarely the case, and although it looked like one of the rods would be off at any moment, it wasn’t to be. I like it like that though. If it’s too easy then there’s little satisfaction when you do catch, it’s much better when you’ve had to earn them. It was clear there were plenty of good fish to be caught, but they weren’t going to give themselves up.

The rest of the day was spent either snoozing in the shade or fish-spotting around the lake and there were always fish to be found somewhere, which was really pleasing. I visit so many places these days where you rarely see the fish, apart from when they are on the mat. To be honest, there were so many likely spots where fish had shown that it was a matter of which ones to pick.

I had found one little spot close to the tree line on the far side where the lead didn’t plug in the silt so much, so I tied up a little stiff rig and baited with a little Snowman Rig consisting of a 12mm Quench bottom bait and a pop-up. I was watching some fish milling about in the corner when I heard the alarm go. This was another really strong fish and I wasn’t at all surprised when it was just a bit bigger than the first one, at 32lbs.

Another great evening followed with a lovely dinner and a few bottles of wine -plus a few of Paul’s Irish coffees - which went down a little too easily it has to be said. It was one of those lovely times where it was warm enough to sit out in a T-shirt, listen to the birds singing, watch the fish jumping, and just let the world go by. The holiday had gone by in a flash, as it always does, but although Etang des Landes might not hold the monsters that Rainbow does, its a very special place, certainly one of the prettiest and most interesting lakes I’ve been fortunate enough to fish.

All in all, it was a trip that completely turned the year around for me. Before setting off from England it was looking like being a reasonable year, but little more than that, and yet, in the space of a few days, I’d caught my two biggest fish ever and gone on to find a little piece of carp fishing heaven. In recent years I’ve learned that you never quite know what’s just around the corner and it’s amazing what can happen in such a short time, and this is one trip I’ll look back on with very fond memories.

Southminster

My wife, daughter and myself fished 72 hours at Southminster over the weekend. A good opening day with me having three carp in the first hour of bivvying up on Pit 6.

The day continued improving with my seven year old daughter smashing her personal best with a 20lb 2oz near leather taken at 19.35 in the evening fishing a heavily backleaded rig in the near margin.

Friday night was fairly quiet, the pit was quite busy and there were a few members being slightly less than quiet.

Saturday was a good day with my wife Julie breaking her PB with a pretty 15lb 9oz mirror that will one day make a stunning 20lber. Saturday night was amazing with so many runs that we went down to one rod !

Sunday was very quiet with no fish caught but this all changed on Sunday night when the place went mad again.

Monday was again quiet except for one screaming run resulting in a straightened size 6 E.S.P raptor…..I have no idea what took the bait, but there seemed no way of stopping it.

Great weekend, too many fish to count.

Be back in 2 weeks.

Etang des Landes (supporter of the Chairman's Carp Cup)

Etang des Landes is undoubtedly one of the prettiest lakes I've been lucky enough to fish. There are some lovely fish to be caught and they were constantly showing themselves. The hospitality, food and the advice from Paul and Mary were all fantastic and made our trip one to remember - we had a great time!"

Etang des Landes (supporter of the Chairman's Carp Cup)

have been fishing for CARP for over 20 years now and I enjoy the annual pilgrimage to France. Like most people I have fished numerous venues in France and have had a varying degree of success and frustration.

However in my opinion the perfect venue has now been found.

There is a lake called Etang Des Landes this is set in the heart of rural France yet only a 30 minute drive from the City of Le Mans. The lake is approximately 4 hours drive from Calais. The route is simple and almost entirely Autoroute including the new southern section of the A28 from Rouen, the journey is effortless with some breathtaking scenery to take in.

The lake is stream fed and approx 5 acres in size, on a 10acre site. Depths range from 3 – 12 feet with a maximum of 5 anglers allowed. The number of swims has been restricted in order to ensure ample room for everyone and the formula appears to be working successfully. There is an impressive existing stock, which has been enhanced with the addition 4 years ago of a large number of quality Carp from the famous Maurepaire fishery. This stocking included 3x 40lbs and 15x 30lb fish with many of the 20’s being in excess of 25lb.

Self-catering anglers are welcome with the village shop close by and in addition a super market just a ten-minute drive away.

That said you have to sample Mary’s cooking and for just £12 a day (payable on site in Euros), you will get a full English breakfast and a full two course evening meal.

Snacks, crisps, chocolate, water, wine and beer are provided at very reasonable prices indeed.

There are proper toilet facilities and a state of the art power shower (Its fantastic); anglers have access to a ‘Carp Room’ with fridge, freezer, kettle, power and a table and chairs to use. Basic accommodation is also available if required.

Paul and Mary cannot do enough to help as they live on site. That said, they are very much in the background, so to speak and do not intrude. They are quite frankly the perfect hosts.

I have personally fished the venue three times now, it has been fished properly for three seasons now and average catch weights are increasing rapidly. Last season there were 14 - 40lb+ captures and this is 5 or 6 different fish over 40lb. The fish appear to be gaining weight at about 3lb-6lb per season. The lake record recorded in August 2007 stands at 48lbs caught by Dennis Wilkinson. This season is eagerly anticipated as more 40’s are expected and who knows that magic 50lb barrier is not far away.

I fished a week in September 2006 with a friend and between us we had 45 runs landing 37 Fish including 2x 40lb 15x 30lb 17x 20lb most of which were in excess of 25lb and just 3 fish under 20lb. Our average catch weight was just under 29lb.

Barleylands

New member and first time fishing here. It seemed quiet round the whole lake. Trevor the bailff was very helpful indeed and ended up catching 3 doubles from 4 runs, the biggest being 15.5lb

Windmill lakes

Our first trip to a BDAC water was a short afternoon / evening session on field lake.

My son Dylan (10yrs old) showed me how to do it again as he hooked into this turbo-charged carp whilst float fishing a rod length out.

It was quite a battle on his light telescopic rod! It ran him all round the lake for about 15mins but with a bit of help he got it in the net!

He can't wait for his next outing.

New Maltings

My daughter and I fished for the first time on a club water at New Maltings on Sunday. Firstly, I would like to say what a lovely, well kept water this is. The bailiffs and other anglers were very willing t pass on advise regarding tactics and baits, which in my experience is rare these days.

Anyway, my daughter started us off by losing a large carp on homemade fruit pellets within ten minutes of arriving, she followed this up with plenty of small roach and finished the day with a carp. A common of 8lb 9oz on chum mixers fished to the front of the island.

I managed two carp, a 13lb Mirror and a 16lb Common, both fell to chum mixers. All fish were in excellent condition.

My daughters name is Phoebe and she is 7 years old and from Stanford le Hope. She has just informed me that she is taking me back next Sunday for fathers day !!!

Windmill lakes

Myself and my son Sam (age 13) are new members to BDAC.  The first day of the season saw us fishing the Old Island Lake

There were plenty of carp 'cruising' the surface, the best of which (10lb) fell to Sam on bread crust.  There were loads of roach/rudd, skimmers

and the odd small tench feeding on maggot - fished shallow.  I hooked a fish (pictured) at 3lbs.  I wasn't sure what it is.  My son recons its a crucian carp but the members hand book doesn't list these as a species.  Could any 'expert' assist with identification.

Many thanks.

PS thanks to the fellow angler/member who donated the maggots.

Etang des Landes (supporter of the Chairman's Carp Cup)

Last year me and my brother Chris visited Etang Des Landes a 5 acre lake set in 10 acres of ground in rural France just over 4hrs drive from the channel ports.

We had such a great time both achieving personal best carp of the 30lb and 34lb that we went again this year leaving on April 26th for a weeks carp angling.

Sadly the weather turned nasty on us and we had two days of heavy rain. This upset the feeding pattern of the lakes carp but we still managed to take two excellent fish Chris had a nice 27lb common at 8-30am on the Tuesday .I had a couple of nice perch on a float and also managed to hook one of the small Zander that are also in the lake.

I had a nice run at 3-30pm on the Wednesday and had a terrific fight with a 28.5lb Mirror.

As before we found our hosts to be very good company and the food was once again superb.

I would recommend Etang Des Landes to any carp angler looking for a quiet secluded lake that holds carp up to 47lb with many fish in the mid to high 30s to give it a go.

Regards

Eddie and Chris Connolly

PS we have already booked for 2009

Etang des Landes (supporter of the Chairman's Carp Cup)

Etang des Landes is a 5 acre estate lake that is absolutely stunning even in its winter plumage. Spring fed at one end, with a dam wall and drain at the other...perfect! We have been fishing it for the last three years in which time it has become a real classy little fishery.

Its owned by a retired couple Paul and Mary who only open it 26 weeks a year, just enough to get by...and that’s it. The hospitality is superb...breakfast and dinner is eaten at their kitchen table in their house! It’s like having your mum cook dinner! Superb, oh and the house is 20 yards from the lake, in good weather dinner is eaten on the terrace and you don’t even have to wind in.

Stock - 13 known 40s, well over 100 30s now and 150 or so upper 20s but to be honest, we don’t really know for sure which is the best thing about it. The two 40s on our last trip were unknown as were three of the upper 30s.

I’ve always been a big venue angler in France, big ressies, big rivers and the like and had never considered this kind of venue...5 acres...a mere puddle!!! I’m used to that for each rod!! But make no mistake it is a great change and a proper holiday, with emphasis on the word holiday. Relax and enjoy.

Etang des Landes (supporter of the Chairman's Carp Cup)

I recently returned from Etang Des Landes where my brother and I both BDAC members spent a very good week. The hosts Mary and Paul Forster made us very welcome were very friendly and the food Mary cooked was par excellent.
Paul has a great lake and is an angler himself one of what I call the old school i.e. we are anglers who fish for carp as well as other species and
not just Carp anglers looking to catch the biggest fish that they can.
As you can see when the carp were not biting I fished a worm and took an unmarked 3lb tench

I had my personal best a 30lb mirror and my brother did the same with a 34lb mirror. I would recommend any angler to fulfill his dream and visit Etang Des Landes for a great weeks fishing with great hosts as well.
