Straits Mill

Weather was cold and wet but as it was the last day to fish BDAC lakes for two months I thought I would give it a go. Arrived at Straits Mill around 8 ock it was tipping it down cold wet and miserable not the weather to start fishing in, and unsurprisingly I had the lake to myself it remained so all day .

Fished along the side of the point swim hoping for some carp to be feeding in the margins, couple of knocks on the line but no fish so after about four hours I moved to the point itself just lobed the baits into the water and moved the rest of the gear then set the rods up properly casting to the spots I wanted to fish, leaning over the first rod to adjust the second , I get a screaming run on the first rod the sort where the bobbin hits the rod and the free spool rotates around at a rate on knots.

Hit the run and hooked a carp that put up a really good fight right up to the net then when it sees the net went ballistic had a great deal of difficulty in keeping it from getting into the submerged bushes on the left of this swim but finally landed a very nice 20+ fish.

Sitting down for a coffee and lunch watched a Cormorant feeding on the big lake doing better than me but that’s not unusual, first one I have seen on this lake this season as its the last day there’s nobody to disturb them lets hope he doesn’t bring his mates along for a free feed.

Sitting there I watched a pair of Swallows for over an hour, flying over the lake the first of the year earliest I’ve seen them for a number of years, I sat watching these birds amazing acrobatics over the water flying skills any pilot would like to emulate when bang another screaming run almost identical performance as the first and when I finally landed this fish it was a little larger and in superb condition

Shortly after there was another run but I failed to hook the fish and having decided that on this most uninspiring of days I had enjoyed myself enough for this season packed up and went home.

Fishing’s not all about catching fish but it helps

Windmill Lakes

Well the season comes to the end so I thought that I have a go over at field lake. Not the best of days as far as the weather goes, with strong winds and rain but Ii did catch a nice common. Only thing was Ii didnt think I would catch anything so didnt take my scales. May have been a 20, my boy had 1 to but the swim he was fishing  had the platform under water and he lost it under the platform. Roll on 1st june

Thoby Wood

Hi my name is martin I fished Thoby Wood on 27/03/10 the last weekend of the season, only fished from 11am to 6pm i found large carp feeding only 4 feet off the bank with tails coming out the water so about 3-4 feet deep. I put one rod on the baited spot and one just off and within 1hr  I had the 1st carp in my landing net, a 23lb common, then lost one. About 3pm I had my 2nd carp, a 14lb common and at 4pm my right hand rod jumped in to life with my 3rd carp a 20lb mirror, then lost good fish at 5pm.  All the fish came to essex carp baits pineapple peril's

Willow Mere

Me and brother in law Lee Roake went to Willow Mere to fish for pike on the 4 march 2010  thinking about and hoping for a double figure pike.  We arrived at 7am on a cold morning only to sit there for three hours with out a sniff so we decided to change tack and go for carp.

We then sat there for another three hours with not even one bite,  but at about 1pm all hell broke loose when lees rod shot off to produce a nice 14 lb common. The only trouble was that his reel got snagged up and wouldn’t wind  in,  so I literally pulled the fish in by hand which we couldn’t believe after we netted it!

30 mins later his rod shot off again,  this time his reel worked!!  Lucky it did as you can see it turned out to be a lovely 18 lb mirror which put up a great fight, with  his own pb broke I thought there was little hope for me as we where going in half hour.

But then all off a sudden ten mins later my rod screamed off with  another great fight. I thought it was a smaller fish until we got it in the net, an 18 lb 2 oz common. Lee still thinks I put extra bollies in the fishes mouth to get the 2 ozs more!

As you can see both fish where in great condition.  Within  the hour we had both  broke our pbs and went home very happy after thinking it was not our day, its never over until you reel in !!

Straits Mill

Been looking at the latest newsletter and the recent catch report for Straits Mill (Geoff Latham) and notice there is interest in any small carp or tench turning up. I fished Straits Mill a couple of times in October and November. On the same day that I caught this small carp (about 4lbs) I also had a small tench of about 1.5lbs. It was in the large lake on the same side as the river. The swim was down some steps and there was a large tree root in the swim on the right hand side which I float fished behind in the margin in about 9 or 10 feet of water.

Straits Mill River Blackwater 11 March 2010

Fished this venue for the past few weeks it’s been very hard in the cold spell and struggled with small Roach and Perch.

Finally using cheese paste and a short quiver tip rod produced this nice Chub of 4lb+

This complex has the makings  of a superb fishery with carp in excess of 20lb and some good size Bream showing up in the big lake all I would like to see next season is some nice Tench

Roding & Wid

Fished the Roding at Shonks MIll on 27th for a couple of hours in the evening. Very hard, river looked almost perfect but only 1 roach to show for my efforts.

Fished The Wid today, 28th December. Again very hard but manged a couple of reasonable chub and a good roach towards the end of the day. And 2 minnows in the morning! Lost a better chub as well after it beat me to an overhanging nearside bush.

The river was looking nice, clearing with a tinge of colour and a good pace. Oddly enough, the chub came from the main current, running under overhanging bushes. Given he recent cold weather I thought the slacks would be bankers......but obviously not! Got plenty of bites but not many that were hittable, guess the fish were fairly comatose in the cold water, or it was the minnows. All fish came to bread.

Blanked a very high and coloured Roding at Patch Park last week (3rd) - took 2 photos as a reminder that the duckweed has long gone !

Went back to the Wid today (9th) .Had 4 chub, around the same sort of size - 2lb ish but all in great condition.Loads of good swims and today met 3 other members, all catching.

R Wid

Fished today, Saturday, the river was in lovely condition, still a good colour but had dropped a few feet from the floods earlier in the week.

Caught 7 chub , some nice roach and a small dace using roving tactics and bread. The chub were smaller than those on the Roding, biggest were 2 1/2 pounds, but there seems to be a good head of fish on this stretch. Almost every likely looking swim produced either fish or bites, and very quickly, probably due to the ideal water conditions.

This is a nice bit of river, ideal for wandering about on, a big thimbs up to whoever negotiated the lease!

Fished the Wid for a few hours today - 2 nice Chub and a decent Roach plus a 2lb 6oz Perch,a PB.
Used single swanshot,touch ledgered lobs.
Lot of colour in river and plenty of snags but there seem to be loads of fish.
No one around but managed to get a decent picture with camera propped up and remote control.

Asheldham

Tuesday 24th November 2009: Despite the strong and gusty winds I decided to go fishing.  The shelter of Asheldham was ideal and decided to set up on the right of the car park looking towards the bridge.  On arrival, I saw some carp moving under the trees on the opposite bank and placed a ledgered 10mm flourescent boilie close by (with a small pva mesh containing some micro pellets, crushed boilies and stick-mix groundbait).  Within 5 minutes, I had a 6lb 12oz common on my unhooking mat. 5 more  followed at regular intervals during the day, each one putting up a good fight for its size.  The biggest was 10lb 1oz.  I was the only one there, although I did see the fishery officer and had a nice chat with him (useful info for the future!).

Armigers - Bottom Lake

 Tuesday 22nd september 2009

Me (alan Smith) and a new member Simon Poole set up for a long day at armigers, I'm showing him all the lakes I can and he's loving the sport that billericay offers in his first season as a member. Started fishing at 11:30am and packed up at 6:30pm (ish) between the two of us fishing feeder (simon) and pellet waggler with white spiked boilie (me) we landed somewhere in the region of, and possibly underestimated 525lb's+ of carp every fish was in the 4-7lb mark and we had over 100 of them. A slight concern is the condition of the fishes mouths, missing sides, ripped. I do not know enough to say whether it is solely the anglers or if there is a bacterial infection attacking hook wounds but might I recommend for the enjoyment of our future members at this lake that we start requesting peple buy and use any of the numerous carp care packs available at tackle shops very cheaply, it was very disheartening to see so many wonderful fighting fish so deformed, but only taints the achievement of the day slightly.

Thoby Wood

 Saturday 12th September 2009

We set ourselves up for a day trying our new fishery at Thoby Wood, my dad (paul) set out on feeder and corn to the lily pads on the bank over the car park and I opted for carp tactics fishing a simple in line leger with size 12 hook and a single Dynamite baits red fish boilie, baited with a small PVA bad of micro pellets and crushed hook boiles. Within 10 mins my bobbin started to dance as I was helping to tidy the swim and set up Pauls rig and was extremely surprised to land a 8lb 10oz bream (no photo's as no camera) smashing my personal best by nearly 5lb's, the rest of the day was quiet and to my knowledge we were the only people who caught all day.

The following saturday we returned to Thoby wood again and this time Paul was on the fish landing 2 bream 3lb 2oz and 4lb 12oz also breaking his personal best, on feeder and corn once again. We are informed by people who have fished the lake regularly with previous clubs that it is is much diminished since billericay took over but I feel this is environmental and nothing more as other lakes have been the same

Mountnessing

I caught this 20lb 5oz carp at the Windmill lakes, Mountnessing (Field Lake) on Sunday 13th Sept in the afternoon along with another 10lb ish fish, but didn't I
bother weighing that one after my PB. Just popped in for a couple of hours session to try out my new bargain chair that I'd just bought from Dunton boot sale, to polish off the afternoon and bingo! caught my first 20+...Guess thats how it can happen sometimes...you gotta be in it to win it!
My old mate Mark Wilson blanked again but took half the credit for striking the fish whilst I went back to the motor for the kettle, the kettle is now always attached
to my rod bag.

Parsonage Farm

Fished there today from 8 til 1 pm. Had a nice double figure net of mainly Rudd, with a few roach and hybrids. No skimmers or tench though.

Started off with 5 big balls of groundbait with dead maggots and casters at about 7m. No bites for over an hour, once the fish came though it was pretty steady for the rest of the session. Loose fed casters and hemp over the top of the initial feed kept them interested.

Straits Mill

Just wondered if I have set some sort of record. I visited straits mill for a bit of pike fishing. Baited up on a simple float rig with a barbless  6 treble and a sardine I got a great run, very fast. After it got me in the weeds and other obstacles I managed to get it free and imagine my surprise when I got to the net this fairly hooked superb 22lb common. Can anyone tell me if they have had this kind of experience before. After that I was reeling in a boilie rig I had cast out for some carp I had seen feeding when it was taken by this jack pike . talk about reverse roles. About an hour later my pop up was taken by this nice 14lb common. Fortunately my son who came over to see how i was doing was there to take the photo. who said fishing is dull. At least this time I remembered to take a camera with me.

Laundry Lake

On Sunday 13 September 2009  my son in law and  myself fished Laundry lake, a really nice lake, it was the first time for me, and the second time for  Steve my son in law. We fished about half way down on the left hand side of the lake and set ourselves up, it was not to long before we got some action Steve had a real good run and hooked into a nice 16lb Mirror carp. We both had some little bites for the next four hours but no fish, then  my alarm went off and I hooked into a 20lb Mirror carp that put up a good struggle which now is my personal best. About an hour later my bait alarm went off again and I hooked into a nice 16 1/2 lb Mirror carp which also put up a good struggle. It went a bit quite for a couple of hours and we decided to call it a day, when Steve’s alarm went off, he hooked into a beautiful 17 lb Common carp, the fish put up a good fight and when we got up on the bank the fish was  superb, beautiful condition and  colouring truly a lovely fish. We called it a day about an hour later, we both had a great days fishing, me with my personal best and Steve with his beautiful Common carp

Laundry Lake

I visited Laundry Lake last Sunday for a short session, having originally intended to fish the Rectory Ponds, but finding my favourite top lake covered in green weed!

I arrived at around 10am and was surprised to see the car park quite full, but no one catching as I walked around the lake.  I decided to fish at the far bottom end, as most of the other swims were taken. There was a strong wind was blowing in my face, nevertheless I saw a few good sized carp rolling on the surface, so out came the trusted waggler rod, set to fish about 4 feet deep.  There were no bites initially, but after several casts and roughly half an hour, away went the float and I was into a decent carp.  It took a while to land, but finally a lovely 19lb mirror was on the bank.  Another 20 minutes passed and I was into another mirror, this one weighing in at 12lb, but which fought just as hard.

I missed one more bite and packed up around 1.30pm, not bad for 3 hours fishing.  More surprisingly, only one other carp was caught whilst I was there.  I’ll be back shortly for another crack though.

I visited Thoby Wood on 28th August and caught these two carp.  Unfortunately I did not have my scales on me to weigh them.  I also lost another one.  All carp fought very hard, the larger taking me nearly to the other end of the lake) and were very nice looking fish.

Parsonage Farm

Fished it on Sunday 30th August for first time.

Fished first platform by lillies at the bottom end of the lake. Caught some very nice rudd & rudd/bream hybrids between 10 oz and just over a pound. A few smaller rudd, roach and roach/bream hybrids and 3 tench between 12 oz & 1lb. Caught on the pole at about 9m.

Didn't catch a large quantity of fish and had a spell of about 90 mins with no bites. The fish did start to switch on as the light levels fell from around 7pm, then it was a bite a cast. Used maggot/caster over groundbait. About 8 1/2 lb of fish in total.

Kings Court

Had two trips to Kings court over last few weeks. Few Rudd & a Carp/goldfish on first trip

Second trip had around 10lb rudd & perch, with quite a few chunky fish in there. Fed two swims, one with a load of chopped worm & caster, the other with a good bombardment of groundbait with caster & sweetcorn. Fished from 7am onwards Perch responded well to chopped worm. No sign of the tench though, none of the other 6 or so people fishing had caught any either, although one or two had caught a brown goldfish. Quite a nice session actually, despite the lack of tench. The place makes you think!!

Laundry Lake

Went over to lake on sunday 2nd August at around 2pm,a few anglers were there and getting runs pretty frequently so things looked good.I set up on one of the pad swims and within 20 minutes had a run unfortunately the hook pulled out and the carp was lost, the commotion stopped fish coming into the swim for a while but at about 6:30pm I had another screaming run and an awesome tussle with a common I didn't know was in Laundry. I landed it and after staring in disbelief weighed it at 24lbs 1oz definitely the biggest common I,ve seen here. Another angler came to have a look and was equally impressed. Fool that I am I came out without my camera, now I,ll have to catch it again, everyone deserves to see this fish. I had a smaller common an hour later of 13lbs 9oz also in great condition,a top afternoon apart from no photos.

Thoby wood

Visited Tobywood today 2nd June arrived at 06-00am beautiful sunny day even at this early in the morning, fantastic looking lake easy access, bailiff was very helpful and friendly, got myself set up and cast out had a couple
of small runs after 30 mins but did not hook into any of the fish, noticed that there were a lot of carp cruising about just below the surface, so I decided to reel one of my rods in and change to a bit of floating crust within 5 mins I had a 6 pound common carp, I did not have any more luck till
about 3 hours later, when I had a good run it went off like a bullet and got stuck in to a nice carp, which weighed 14 pounds, the bait was a vanilla bollie cut in half placed back to back topped with sweet corn

Our first fishing trip of the season 13-06-09 and my daughter Paige Collins aged 12 who normally only float fishes decided that she wanted to have a go at carp fishing. Well here is the result. We were really pleased with her as she landed it all by herself not bad for the first time!

Laundry Lake 13-06-09

Went over in the afternoon on a very hot saturday,I started fishing on the top and was soon into what felt like a large carp,it must of run 60 yards until unfortuanetly the hook pulled free (ah well you win some you lose some).Later on I went over to bottom fishing and managed to hook and land this lovely 18lbs 3oz mirror, the carp seem to be in superb condition at the moment and the average weights seem to be getting bigger, also the crayfish problems seem to be getting  easier.

Laundry Lake

Sunday 07-06-09 My first outing of the season, pouring rain for the first 3 hours then it brightened up and so did the fishing. My first run and carp of the season was Blackscale, unbelievable, and I watched him swim in and suck up my sweetcorn and run off at a great rate of knots. He tipped the scales at 24lbs 13oz and was in fine condition after which I had a mirror off the top at 10lbs 12oz followed by another good looking mirror taken on the same spot as Blackscale weighing 17lbs 1oz.

Laundry Lake

My name is Lewis Cushney,16, and I recently visited Laundry Lakes for the afternoon. I fished with one rod method feeder style, and in about 5 hours, I had 4 fish, the biggest a 21 lb mirror (left), along with 2 cracking commons weighing 15lb and 16lb (left), and another small mirror at the end of the day. This is a cracking result, and it was my first visit to the venue this year!
