29th/30th Overnighter - Pit 6 Southminster

What a great way to end my season, with a cheeky overnighter on my old favourite pit.

I pitched up in the 'Rat Swim' and got two adjustable zig rigs out, along the reeds.
It wasn't too long before I started getting takes a foot below the surface and ended up with sixteen carp from 5lbs to 10lbs.
The bites dropped off around 8pm, so I called it a day and got some sleep. The following morning, I had one last common and one came off, then called it a day around 10am.

All in all a great, but knackering session, all of which I filmed for a new Youtube video, which will be uploaded soon to our Zigah Crew Anglers Facebook page.

Cheers all, looking forward to a couple of work party days and the new season in May.
Regards,
Neil Stanley

Jackletts Farm - 29th-30th March

For the last weekend of the season it was arranged to go for the night at Jackletts Farm alongside Alex and Jamie. Considering it was the last weekend of the season it wasn't busy with two others on the lake resulting in a number of fish. The lake proved to be a good night water, as well as the early hours in the morning being a productive bite time.

Southminster 16-03-14 Pit 3

A late start for me and not my 'usual' swim. I fished the upper, snaggy corner backing onto Pit 8. I put my stalker rod into the middle of that corner and half an hour later landed a feisty little common around 5lbs on a Richworth pink pop up (which was free from Carpin' On from the day before!). Then, after playing around with the other rod on adjustable zig, the same margin rod hooped round and landed a nice little common at around 7 or 8lbs. This time on a Nutrabiats plum and caprioc pop up, another small common of 6lbs came in around 3pm, then I moved swims to the car park swim, where I had a little chat with Tynan (Nice talking with you mate, glad my tips paid off!). I packed up bang on 5pm in the evening sun.

Making the best of the fine weather and the final few weeks of the season. 3 more carp caught this week, again all in the last hour before dark. A nice Common of 15-12, a deep bellied Mirror of 17-8 and another Mirror 14-10.

Southminster

Arrived at 4ish to see thirteen cars parked and plenty of people fishing three and six on a lovely sunny day. I spoke to five anglers packing up or still fishing and all was gloom, either blanks or one or two fish. As per one of the  Zigah Crew who was in place on the car park swim, he gave me some tips on Pit One which I was planning to fish, good man. After hauling two loads of all bar the kitchen sink to Pit One I pounced on the two blokes packing up in the Beach swim and found the first happy fisherman, he’d caught tench and carp on sweetcorn up to the bank opposite and slightly to the left, his mate had blanked on boilie all over the lake to the right and forwards. Nice chaps.

Rods in by 5.30 and I had some beeps from a wafter boilie on combi rig off to the right bank. Shelter up and more or less organised and the first bite arrives at 18:04, a rather chunky 4lb bream off method feeder and sweetcorn (handmade method mix used white bread mashed up with brown crumb and some odd pellets – very sticky but it seemed to work), the blank is saved nice and early for once I thought.

18:17, the right rod goes and in comes what I recognise from pictures to be a tench, perhaps two pounds, my first ever and so a new PB! Boilie in shot, shrimp and tutti wafter in case you’re wondering.

18:56 The same rod produces a very scrappy common weighing in at 9 1\4. The line wasn’t in the alarm properly so an old fashioned bait runner noise bite.

I lose a half decent carp after a couple of seconds on the method rod, dark now so I belatedly get the bivvie up and setup in the dark (practice from those gloomy winter days). I’ve had nothing since breakfast so a (precooked) Lamb Tagine and rice goes on the stove with a nice Golden Champion to cleanse the taste buds. All set up now, it’s a nice big open dry swim and very roomy for one, bring it on. It’s already a lovely evening, mild, still and the water very calm.

21:51 Another tench about the same size as the previous one, I’m putting some feed out and it seems to be working.

22:21, Another tench, you wait 48 years to catch one and three come along at once.

01:17 a scrappy and very handsome 7lb mirror, the picture doesn’t do it justice. A glorious night now, a full moon makes it almost light, proper shadows and the pit is mill pond flat. It’s so lovely I decide to stay up as long as the fish are prepared to play along and the beer lasts. The beer lasts and I land a small tench and some small bream from the middle of the pit, I lose a decent bream just as the net slid out towards it. A bit peaky now and I turn in about 3.30, rudely woken by single beeps  at hourly intervals from the method rod. One other fella on site but heaven knows where.

Rudely woken up by the loudest and most enthusiastic dawn chorus ever, a proper muscular effort, ludicrous. Up, polar suit on, nice morning but fresh. I move the boilie (now Tutti Frutti wafter) into the bay to the left.

07:13 As I pour a cup of tea a very firm bite brings a 7lb common, they’re tricky in that bay as they’re surrounded by ‘features’ and you have to bring them in slightly round a tree towards a submerged platform.

07:34 And again, a big run followed by some fancy dancing to stop it getting into the endless tree roots, brambles etc etc another very handsome 7lb mirror and still trying to drink tea two.

Bacon buttie and start to pack up, it’s gone a bit quiet, everything packed up now bar the classic last rod and even that is going to have to come out and as I stroll towards it off it goes, a small tench I think, it’s small but lively, as it surfaces I think small bream, then as it goes into the net I think, it’s like a roach only too big.

08:59 13 oz! Good lord, a second PB, I’ve not paid too much attention to roach so far but this one is way bigger than any I’ve caught before.

All in all a brilliant session, fish came fairly steadily and in no particular order. Enough for me to lose count a bit which is always nice. I think five carp to nine and a bit, three tench to 2lb, four bream to 4lb and a roach to 13oz. Lost a decentish carp, a decentish bream  and a small carp to hook pull

I liked Pit One very much, the ‘Island’ swims looked nice. They were some young lads fishing on the far bank when I started but I didn’t notice them catch anything. Otherwise I had it all to myself.

Southminster Pit 6: 09-03-14

A very chilly start, but the sun was soon up and burning down all day, with very little wind. A slow start to the bites, but some over night carpers had over twelve carp from our end of the pit. I ended up with four carp (one zig caught), Dave had two and Paul had a pretty little mirror at 5:15pm, when we packed up. All caught on Paul's 'Zigah Baits' new boilie range.

Tight lines from Dave, Paul and Neil

Hick's Farm 06-03-14

A crisp and bright day down on Hick's, this time field testing some newly rolled boilies. Hick's isn't usually a boilie water, but I landed eight carp in total, with the two biggest pictured at around 4-5lbs. Starting to pick up here now, but the cold wind made me pack up around 4:30pm being the last to leave.

Pit 6 23-2-14

So three of us were back out on our old haunt again -Pit 6. It was very windy but mild and with a little rain in the morning. We assembled with Dave in the point swim, with Paul and I hitting the reeds across the channel. It got to around midday before I connected with a small 5lb common, then Dave had one. Paul got a screaming run, but it snagged him up in a fallen tree branch and was a big fish. Dave had another three fish all around 4pm including two old warrior mirrors. All caught on Zigah Baits "Coconut Plus" boilies. Not bad for a winter session.

Barleylands

19-02-14

A wet start to a quiet Wednesday morning. Found a grassy swim round the back end of the lake and baited up my swim. Once I got past the diving ducks, my hook baits went out. The lake was like a mill pond and conditions were brightening up. A few bites later and one lost take, I hooked into this stunning little 9lb common around 2pm.

Tight Lines from Dave Storey.

Southminster Pit 3 08/02/14

After a very wet and windy start, three of us had four rods out in total and fished from the car park side. The water levels on all the pits were maxed out, with pit 4 flooded across the spit. After three hours, I connected with a small Mirror, then Dave hooked into a nice little Common. An hour passed and I had another small Mirror. Dave also connected with a fish, but it came off due to the small hook size. Not a bad day considering the bad conditions lately. If we'd have had two rods each, I reckon we could have landed a couple more. All fish caught using Zigah Baits hand rolled boilies.

More reports to come this year, as we are going to try out some new club venues.

Thoby Wood

Sunday 22nd December some sun but very windy, cold 8 degrees.  The ground very wet and lake overflowing following last few days heavy rain. Couldn’t stand any more Christmas shopping so 2.00pm me and my son Sam are fishing peg 19 & 20 at Thoby Wood.  Strangely we had the lake to ourselves.  With two hours before dark – just enough time to cast out two rods with ‘cell’ boilie and small PVA bags.  In addition I had a 5m whip that I fished single maggot size 20 hook - hard on bottom - with a dozen maggots hand fed over the top.  Within 20 mins Sam’s rod bleeped and kept bleeping.  Fish on.  A plodding fight followed with side strain needed to keep the fish from a rotting lily pad, then in the net.  A beautiful mirror carp weighing in at just over 23lbs.  Well worth getting cold for.  Although no other carp caught the roach showed late on to the maggots.  At least half a dozen netable size the biggest just under 1lb.  Merry Christmas and let’s see if we can manage anything bigger in 2014.

22/12/13 Southminster Pit 1

Great session today. Started off with a lot of wind and rain, but it eased off for some nice winter sun. We caught all the species in the pit apart from a Carp! Perch, Bream, Tench, Roach and Rudd were all caught on maggots either on the float or on the swim feeder. One common Carp was landed by another angler next to us. Looking forward to some more winter sport next week on Pit 6.

Merry Christmas and tight lines for the New Year!

Best wishes, Neil, Dave & Paul - Zigah Crew Anglers

Henny Street

After the worst start to the Pike season I can remember, I decided to give Henny Street a try
I didn’t arrive until after 10am as it was my turn to Bailiff at Straits, I believe that there is an Otter Holt in the pill box so decided to go for a long walk just before the third pill box sat myself down 30 minutes into the session away slides the near float and after a short flight a nicely marked Pike of just over 10lb is on the bank, 10 minutes later I move as is my practise to work my way back to the car, I pass another guy Pike fishing had a short chat he tells me he had a small jack, then I carried on walking I stopped on the next bend some way from him, dropped my two floats in and propped the rods on a couple of rests,
Don’t take long for the near float again to starts to move towards the middle of the river a firm strike and all goes solid after a while the fish rolls on the surface and it’s a lump with one treble in the side of its mouth and the other with the bait still attached outside not the best hook hold, finally landed it 21lb12oz well that brightened the season, another 10min and I move again moved several more times had one more fish about 5lb,
Saw another guy turn up with all the gear trolley bag stayed for about an hour then went??
If you decide to give Henny Street  a try the banks are steep & muddy, the weed beds make it difficult to reach the water. Take a long landing net handle to land the fish its even more difficult to return a fish so take care, car parking can also be a problem but don’t block the gate.

Dodds Farm

After spending a lot of time fishing Willow mere last season & having good results I was nudged in the direction of Dodds farm by my Dad who has been a billericay member for many years. My first look at Dodds & I was not to sure, I thought its just another round hole in a field, as I like the aged fill to a lake with plenty of features & cover. But then after walking around for a hour or two I spotted some good size fish mooching around in the weed beds that cover the edge's of the lake so I thought what the hell give it ago.

Well that was some months back now & here's just a few of the stunning looking carp that my son & I have caught so far this season.
Well I say me, but it's mostly him, Lucky sod.

Myself and my dad went over to old island lake on 13/11/13 not knowing what to expect due to the weather... Started with a cold morning but got there around half 8 and there was no wind and the sun was breaking through the clouds, there was already a fella fishing. I  had my first fish around 11 o'clock and once I got the first, a few more followed. I was up to 4 fish, the biggest being 13lb 6oz before my dad had his first and also lost one at around half 12 and that was it for him. I then went on to have another 2 and lost 1 nothing beating the 13lber and packed up around 2.45 pm
All in all a good days fishing and the weather was great also was a bit shocked to see some fish jumping, bring on the pike fishing

Pits 1, 3 & 4, Southminster 10-11-13

After some overnight rain and a slight frost, the sky was clear, cold and blue all day! We started off on Pit 1 around 8am, where we had one mirror and two commons (all small). Then moved over to Pit 3, where Paul and Dave had another small carp each. Then finally moved down to Pit 4 for the last two hours, no fish but loads of Perch on the hunt. The bites have dropped off a lot from last weekend, due to the cold snap. Time to wrap up warm for the coming winter sessions.

Zigah Crew Anglers: Bonfire Night Special, Pit 3 Southminster 2/3rd Nov '13

A bright but windy start to the weekend over on Pit 3. Paul set up at first light from the large car park swim and was using our own ‘Zigah Baits’ boilies. He landed six carp by the time I arrived at 11:30. Within half an hour, I landed my first double figure common and proceeded to catch all day until dusk on the new bait, with three doubles landed. By this time we had landed 17 carp to 12lbs, with Paul having his first brace, a small linear and common around 6lbs each. Into the night and the bites dropped off considerably, probably due to the fireworks. We both had runs with two lost fish, but Paul landed a small common. Dave arrived at 5am on Sunday and had two doubles before 9am from the back corner swim. A few more carp landed up to around 5pm on Sunday evening. A great session, but very cold and windy at night!!

Tight lines from Paul, Dave & Neil.

Hick's Farm 9th & 10th October 2013

Two short sessions produced over twenty carp for Dave on Wednesday and today (10th of October), we both had about six carp each, with one double off the top and the rest on ledgered meat a few rod lengths out before the sun set. Sizes around 3-8lbs, with two just into double figures. One observation is the water level was at least a foot down on its normal level and hardly any water fowl, just the odd coot.

Finally a reminder to lock the gate closed, as we found it open on both days and it wasn't the farmer as his padlock was locked.

Regards, Neil & Dave.

Southminster: 15-09-13

Just when we all thought the weather was going to ruin a good Sunday's fishing, the rain held off long enough for us to land six Roach, four Perch, Two Bream and around sixteen carp!! We all started off on pit 6 in the morning sunshine, Paul had two nice carp to start with and I followed suit. Then we moved over to Pit 3, as the lake was empty. Ended up continually catching fish until 4pm! Dave had a nice Bream and a few Roach after a long time off with a broken arm. All in all, a great day when it all comes together. Biggest carp was around 10-11lbs, prettiest was a dark old mirror around 6lbs.
