Hick's Farm 21/03/2015

This will be my last session this season, but really looking forward to the 1st of May.

Hick's was fairly busy, with seven other anglers on the water. I got there just after 10am, but was testing out a new adjustable zig rig system called 'The ZOMB'. Had a few bites, fishing a black pop up a foot under the surface, then I hooked into a small mirror, before the geese ruined the swim. Switched over to a standard ledger rig and had a few out of the margins on a pink pop up barrel.

If you like zig fishing, check out my page on Facebook: www.facebook.com/ZOMBzigbomb

Thanks for a great season BDAC! See you in May.

Tight lines!

Rectory Ponds

Hi guys I fished the lower lake today monday 09-03-15 and its nice to see them cruising around just under the surface.
Caught these few larger ones all weighing around the 10lb mark but on the day I had about 25 carp all on banded pellet.

Patch Park

There are only 10 days to go of the river season, and the Roding was just perfect this morning (4th March).
I started on the stretch the Club is giving up, and trotted a dendra along a straight run. The float sunk, and I landed a chub which weighed exactly 4lbs, just before 8 a.m.
I moved to the large pool at the top of this field, and with the same bait took a chub of 2lbs 8oz. This pool will not be lost to the Club, as it can be fished from the other bank if you cross the bridge at Patch Park, and the bank for approximately half the stretch we are losing will be accessible to you.
I then moved upstream of the bridge (some will know the run on the other side of the ditch), and decided to fill it in with maggots. It was not long before the float went again, and another big chub was landed, on three maggots. This one went 4lbs 1oz, and it is the first time in 25 years I have had two four-pounders in one session. It goes without saying that I saw no other members today, I suppose they are all at some easy carp pool!

Henny St

I did manage to get out on the river Stour on Monday with a good friend Dave, both of us have trouble walking any distance nowadays,  so we decided on a more static approach after the Pike, strange we both brought the same dead baits Mackerel and Sardine, we plonked ourselves down about the third or fourth bend down opposite a small inlet that had produced some good  fish before, sitting next to each other so that we could chat as we hadn't seen each other for some time.
Within the first 15mins Dave was in to a fish but after a short fight it came off, the second fish wasn't so lucky and he landed a fish of around 6lb, then he lost another sometime later, then it was my turn to lose a fish, beginning to be the pattern of the day, Dave went on to land another two fish and lose three more, me well that was the only take of the day, yet our floats were no more than 20ft apart, just goes to show how close together the fish are now they are getting ready to spawn as we know there is a twenty plus female  fish  in this area.
Not such a good day for me but a good one for Dave and we had the pleasure of a skylark all day long don’t often hear them so much now
Until the next time

Windmill

Have you ever tried to catch your age (in my case 69) in the number of fish caught in a session? I did today by accident, when I found the Roding which I was intending to trot with a few maggots, bread or worms, was a raging torrent up to the top of its banks. So it was off to Windmill Lakes, half-way home, where I was alone in the car park at Field & Swan. With my 17 ft trotting rod and 3lb line, I didn’t want any carp putting in an appearance, and thankfully the small silver fish kept me busy for four and a half hours. A succession of roach, hybrids, skimmers, and perch took either two maggots or small pieces of flake. However, it wasn’t just silver-bashing all of the time. Now and then everything would go solid, and I landed three bream which I weighed at 4lbs 8oz, 5lbs, and 5lbs 12oz. All my fish were caught within a metre of the reeds on peg 15 on Field Lake. Field and Swan always react to milder days, and it was good to catch these bigger bream, which were in better nick than they can appear in the height of Summer.
Now I’ve got to try and convince the boss at home that the Roding will be perfect next Sunday, provided we get no more rain.

Southminster, Pit 1 14th Dec 2014.

After planning a Perch fishing trip for a week or so, the weather had just turned cold with a hard frost and clear skies. I headed off to Southminster, hoping it wasn't frozen over. Once the gate was opened, I found myself alone! I had already planned to fish Pit 1, as I'd caught some nice Perch from there before. After locating a small shoal of Rudd, only one small 'Perchling' fell to a double red maggot on the float. I did have another rod out with a king prawn on the end, hoping for something bigger. But by the time 3pm came round, I was getting too cold to continue. A lovely day though and enjoyed the winter sun. Just a shame I missed the dusk biting time period.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and best fishes for 2015!!

Neil Stanley

Dodds Farm 9/11/14 & 16/11/14

Reasonable temperatures have kept the carp interested, with good fish coming in the last half hour before dark on both days. In fact the wife says I should just go for the last hour (no fear)!

Had a 17-8 Common and a Mirror 21-3. The Mirror was a very long fish and I really thought it would be heavier, but not complaining!

Pit 3 Southminster 18-10-14

Arrived at the pits around 10:30, to a very warm and unseasonable October day. Quite a few cars from overnighters and match guys, so I just set up in my favourite 'carpy corner' of Pit 3. I put out a zig mid-water, but nothing was happening there, so that rod got switched to a bottom bait in the margins. Good choice as I connected with three good carp within two hours. The other rod was out and that ended up catching a small wild carp, a common and a small bream, from another margin opposite. I used a mixture of ground bait and mini boilies to get them going. Not bad for six hours fishing. Packed up around 4pm, as it started raining and I had no brolly!!

Straits Mill

Had an afternoons fishing after the work party this Tuesday 7 October at Straits.
Decided to give the Pike rods an airing as it was October and not up to moving about, sat myself on peg 3 of the big lake, after about 1 1/2 hours I recast the rods with a fresh Sardine, one on a float ledger the other just a straight ledger, after a further 30 minutes the sun was warm and I was starting to nod off then bang the left hand rod takes off on a powerful run. After a fairly strange fight the fish is close to the net, before I see its dorsal fin break the surface no Pike this but a rather large Carp of around 18 to 20lb.
Once landed it was obvious this fish had been caught before as its mouth had been damaged at some time. though this hadn't stopped it feeding well as it was fat and healthy and just had a  taste for fish flesh.

Southminster 04-10-14

I arrived around midday and was going to fish pit 3, but it looked a bit pressured, so I walked round to pit 6 which was empty of anglers!! Chose my favourite 'rat swim' and baited up a margin. I had one close in and one zig rig out by the reeds. Within a few minutes I had my first fish on the zig and then the margin rod hooped round. I had a small wild carp on the zig and two commons at around 8-10lbs from the margin swim. Finished up going home like a drowned rat, as it rained most of the time.

Thoby Wood

I visited this lake for the first time in about a year and was pleased to see it pretty much weed free.  I set up about 2/3rd the way to the far end (peg 27) early in the day and, as I could see some carp cruising I tried with a zig rig plus a bottom bait.  Varying the presentation all day I got nothing until about 5pm when I landed a bream weighing 4lb 13oz from the bottom bait.  Not bad but I would still like a carp!  As the sun got lower in the sky the carp started feeding off the surface so I swapped the zig for a surface rig.  As usual, these carp are very cautious so I went light.  Just as things were getting interesting, a carp went through the swim imitating a dolphin(!) and spooked all the fish.  As it was getting late, I started packing away and of course off went the bottom bait.  a strong fight lasted about 20 minutes and eventually my UK PB was in the net.  I had a very nice common of 18lb 14oz.  Well worth the effort. Both fish fell to a 15mm krill boillie.

Hick's Farm 07-09-14

A fairly early start for me for a Sunday (07:30), arrived to find a few more anglers already setting up and a few 'newbie' anglers to Hicks. Picked the first car park swim by the lilly pads and set up a ledger rig for the margins. Started getting fish from the first cast, but plagued by Gudgeon and Rudd. Managed to land seventeen Carp, three doubles (pictured) to 12lbs. Probably a dozen Gudgeon and Rudd as well. Good sport on light tackle and using meat and bread. Left at 15:30 for the usual Sunday roast back at base!!

Please remember to wash your landing nets and unhooking mats properly after a session, to avoid the spread of Koi Herpes Virus on certain waters in Essex.

Here are two Mirror Carp I caught at Barleylands on 31st July and 5th August. They weighed 24 pounds and 20 pounds respectively. They both fell to float-fished Luncheon Meat.

On each occasion, fishing was very slow with both fish coming mid-morning with no further catches despite lots of fish activity.

Sport on this fishery has definitely slowed since early May.

Long Lake, Mountnessing 24-07-14

I arrived at the lake around 4:30pm in a sticky 25c degrees! Shoals of Rudd and Perch were under the surface, along with the odd cruising Carp. Decided to fish the small end in the margins, as a couple of fish were showing there. The only fish I connected with was a 2lb Tench on a Lumpsta Baits ‘pink plus’ boilie. As the evening drew on, more Carp started to show on top, so I swapped rigs and got some floaters out there. After missing three good fish, I finally hooked into this hard fighting Common around the 18lb mark. No other fish came out while I was there. I did also note a group of Deer drinking from the larger shallow end of the lake, a Kingfisher and a Heron. The Old Island is currently suffering from green surface algae.

Long Lake 15-07-14

After two previous blanks at Long Lake, I decided to take my time to find the fish and keep as quiet as possible, as this is a very spooky water. I got to the lake around 4:30, only to find five other anglers in all the best swims! So I set up away from everyone and got a line out. No bites in the margin swim I'd baited up, and definitely wasn't going to catch now that two more guys had set up rather inconsiderately close, knowing I was fishing the margin. So I moved to another area, where I put out some floaters and after an hour, hooked into a fully scaled mirror in the upper doubles. Glad I moved!

Asheldham

On Thursday 3rd July I fished Asheldham and on my very first cast caught this 8 Pound Wild Carp on popped-up pretzel. This was my first ever ‘Wildie’ so I was delighted to see it in my landing net. Sadly, as is so often the case with this beautiful fishery, this fish turned out to be my only bite of the day.

Whilst there I had the pleasure to meet the former managers of the fishery and I would like to publicly compliment this couple on the fantastic job they have both done in making all of the swims so accessible and comfortable.

Southminster 05/07/14

I had been checking the weather, as the hot spell was due to break and right on queue, the rain started at 5am this morning. I got to my swim on Pit 6 around midday and set up in the little corner with the lilly pads. Started off with floating crust and started getting takes off the top from both Carp and good sized Rudd. I managed to land two out of the five Carp, one had one eye and a dozen Rudd to around a pound on my other float rod. The rain was on and off, but they were still feeding. Moved pits and snuck into the top corner of Pit 3, where I landed another four small Carp on floater tactics. Packed up around 8:30pm, finishing off with a nice little linear mirror. If I was doing the night, I think I'd have my work cut out as the takes were getting prolific around the lake.

Kings Court

One of 4 Tench caught on halibut pellet and prawn on Saturday afternoon. This one topping the scales @7lb.1.0. The other 3 between 5lb and 6lb respectively. It seems such a shame this beautiful lake can no longer be fished in the dark as predominantly the Tench and F1 hybrids (BROWN GOLDFISH) are caught  between 7pm and 9 am. Those were the days when you could almost guarantee between 50 - 100lb keep net full.

On Monday 9th June I fished Kings Court at Writtle and had a good day. Using sweet-corn float-fished a rod a half length out I had by lunchtime quite a nice bag of small Rudd and small Tench. By late afternoon I was considering packing up when I caught these two very nice Tench within 5 minutes of each other. They weighed 7 pounds and 7 pounds 4 ounces. As the other two anglers had already left I was unable to get a picture of me holding the fish. However, lying next to the biggest of the two fish is a drinks bottle as a representation of scale.

The lake looked lovely but was very hard work, the whole two lakes had given out two carp, a roach and a tench by the time I left at 4pm, the tench being mine. River Wid at Skeggs Farm. Writtle

Start of season Monday 16th June, Weather mild but cloudy with breeze.  Water very low and clear some weed.

Started the new river season with a late afternoon session on the river Wid.  Began under the ‘blue’ road bridge where some ‘big’ chub were holding in the reduced flow.  First put in and my bread floated off my number 8 hook only to be attacked by the biggest fish in the crowd.  Second time through and all the fish were looking for it – the winner a reasonable specimen of just over 1.5 ponds.  Unfortunately the disturbance melted away the rest of the fish so I moved upstream to the ‘roots’ swim.  My first put through resulted in a 2lb plus chub.  Fortunately this one shot off downstream so managed to net it away from the others and two trots later a third fish – identical to the first. Time for a change in hook size (18) and a move upstream to above the ‘periscope’ swim to trot some maggots. Dace and chublets eventually came together with some rather fat minnows. Another move, again following the bank upstream, to the glide above the tractor crossing.  Quite shallow here so had to keep low off the skyline – this brought more good dace and some troublesome minnows.  Finally moved to the top of the BDAC stretch and settled into the weir pool.  This is very deep water 12 feet+ just off the sill. Began by feeder fishing red maggots but nothing for half an hour.  Changed to tripping a float along the slow flow and kept feeding little but often.  Eventually the float bobbed under and the rod tip bent over.  What on earth could this be?  A rather large perch that’s what.  Easily a pound +.  No wonder the minnows had disappeared.  Over the next half hour I had four more.  Then a blast of late evening sunlight pierced through the cloud and the perch were gone.  Time to walk back to the car and home for tea.

Wildlife – a pair of kingfishers were bombing up and down the surface of the river.  A pair of wagtails were ‘dipping’ in the shallows under the road bridge and the swallows were taking the bugs from off the long grass meadow.

Peter Yates – fishery officer.

Dodds Farm

6am start along with a few others, a very hot day almost from the off and fish showing all over the place very early on. A new pb of 18lb 6oz hooked  at 10ish from the far side of the lilies and weeds in the top right corner of the first lake almost as soon as the float cocked on sweetcorn. A tight clutch and a very big bend in the light feeder rod with 8lb line but some luck and some for once forgiving weed. That was that for the day thereafter, a lot of watching some very big looking fish cruising up and down the bank all day long, refusing to show any interest whatsoever in any bait presented to them. The lakes looked very nice and the lilies were flowering. A dozen odd people there by late morning with the odd small fish coming out I think. As per a few more last knockings, I think a 23lber to the chaps opposite, two doubles to my mate, and a 14lber to the fella on the other lake behind me. So all in all a decent day.

Barleylands

I went fishing at Barleylands on Tuesday 20th May and ended up having a very productive session. My first fish was a small Tench of just under a pound. Approximately half an hour later I hooked into what seemed to be a very large carp which unfortunately threw the hook after a blistering run straight out into the middle of the lake.

All then went quiet until around an hour later I hooked another carp which I successfully landed. It proved to be a 26 pound Mirror. An hour or so later I was in again and I landed my best ever Mirror weighing in at just under 30 pounds.

There were many larger carp spawning in the margins, so I left them alone and cast out two or three rods lengths out with a light float rig and the new "pink plus" boilies from Zigah Baits. Fishing only a foot deep, it wasn't long before I was into the fish and they were coming in thick and fast. Ten carp were landed averaging 7 to 9lbs. Packed up at 2:30pm leaving five other anglers to fish on in the hot 24 degree May sun. The geese now have their goslings, so keep your distance!

Neil Stanley

Southminster Pit 6

2/5/2014: Weather was cool and overcast, a couple of light showers during the morning.  Fishing a ledgered prawn, I caught 2 bream (both in healthy spawning ‘colours’) of about a pound and a half to two pounds plus two cheeky perch of about 12-14oz.  The best result of the day was a 1lb 15oz crucian (a new PB). During the afternoon, the carp started showing in the upper layers and I managed to get 7 fish, between 7 and 12lb each.  These were caught using a zig rig fished about 18in below the surface.  A great day to start this season’s campagn.
