MAY

Etang des Landes

My son and I had a week at Etang des Landes in May and what a week it was! Mike caught 6 x 30s from 30lbs to 37lbs and I improved my personal best twice including this superb mirror weighing in at 44lbs 4oz ( The current lake record) captured on a single "Keswalls special-mix" boilie.

Simon and 36lb Carp

Etang des Landes

Please find the following catch report as requested from 29th April to the 6th May 2006. Gary and myself headed out to Etang Des Landes on the 29th April 2006 for our now annual fishing trip. The first night out was freezing so we were very glad that we packed our warm gear, even so Gary caught a 29lb Carp that night. The weather dramatically improved from then on - so the fish started to bite, picking up the odd fish every day between 25 and 30lb. The highlight of the trip was on the final night, in pouring rain I caught five Carp ranging from 30lb up to 36lb - a new PB, also loosing two fish - while Gary sat and watched and acted as photographer! Yet another great weeks fishing.

JULY

ASHELDHAM

I visited the above fishery on 23/7/06 which is a credit to the keeper who I had a long chat with .He told me that no carp had been out during the day and as the weather was very hot I didn't hold out much hope. However I stayed and managed to catch a common of over 17lb which was lovely condition. I also caught a common of 14lb which I was more pleased with. I treated the fish with antiseptic and returned it looking none the worse.

The keeper also told me some rubbish was left in the car park on a sunday when will these people learn not to spoil it for others they know who the are and should be ashamed. What a great place though.

RECTORY POND

What a great days fishing.  Me and my friend Jeff Mason went to Little Easton on 12/07/06 for a days fishing and we had a great time.  We fished the road side lake and caught all day.  I broke my personal best catch with 250 fish consisting of Roach, Rudd, Skimmers ranging from a few ounces up to 1/2lb+, my best fish being a 10/lb Common Carp in perfect condition.  Jeff also had a good catch with around 150 fish Common Carp, Mirror carp, Skimmer, Rudd, Roach.

All through the day there were cars pulling up with mums and dads with there kids feeding the Ducks and fish from the road side.  We could hear the Carp slurping and sucking in bread so we decided to go over and have a look.  We couldn't believe our eyes it was just like a koi pond they were feeding by hand and there were lots of them. We even made friends with a scruffy old Goose who we were feeding by hand at our swims

Here is a great photo of a 11lb 4oz grass carp caught by Chris Dearman at the Bert Thompson Mixed Pairs Match on 1st July 2006.  All of us there were just happy to see that it finally stayed in the landing net after several attempts to land it showed the carp going in and coming out again.  Well Done Chris !

AUGUST

Armigers

As promised (ref: my email 28/08/06) I am sending you the catch report for our day at Armigers (Jeff Mason/Bob Taber).  We arrived at the lake at about 7am with our wet weather gear as plenty of rain had been forecast and set up on the tree bank of the top lake.  We were into fish immediately, Bob taking some small roach on maggot while I was catching some pasties on worm on our float rods.  I had my ledger rod in the margin under the canopy of the tree to my left baited with corn while Bob had a chuck to the far bank by some weed in front of a willow tree. As there was only one angler on that bank but not in that area he felt safe to do this.  This was not very successful, I was getting some takes there but the fish were dropping the bait after a short run while Bob didn't have a bite. The better fish started to show at around 9.30, Bob was the first to take one, a common around 3-4lb on maggot, on the float rod and I had one shortly after also on the float,a common of about the same size taken on strawberry sweetcorn.

The weather started to deteriorate at about 10.30am, the wind started getting up and the rain started but it didn't affect the fishing.  Thankfully the promised heavy rain didn't come and the showers petered out after an hour or so but the wind did not; It just got stronger. I tried some cheese as recommended in the latest newsletter and got into a fish that shot off across the lake kiting right and didn't stop for about 40 yards.  I played it for a good while thinking that it must be a low double yet when I got it to the net it was a mirror of about 4lb.  I think that I must have forgotten how hard they fight at Armigers.

Around 4.00 Bob got fed up with the gale messing with his float so he chopped it for a maggot feeder and had results immediately taking a common of 6lb.  After that he was getting a bite per chuck close in by an overhanging tree where he had been baiting up for the float.  He took several carp in quick time using this method.  Myself being on the other side of the tree just removed my float but kept the shotting the same to lay the line out nicely and free-lined with worm, corn and maggot at different times with similar success. As mentioned previously, it wasn't too successful on the ledger with no more than 6-7 fish between us but the best baits were sweetcorn and Asda's cocktail sausage. On the float we used maggot, plain corn, flavoured corn, worm, cheese and flavoured luncheon meat.  Everything but the luncheon meat took fish.

The species we caught were: common carp, mirror, roach, rudd and tench.  I caught a small mirror that seemed to have hatched without a dorsal fin.  I examined it closely to see if it had been torn off somehow but there was no scarring whatsoever, the stump of the muscle attachment (to raise and lower the fin) was there, but no fin; just smooth unmarked skin. Strange.

To end, we had a good day in bad conditions. We had virtually 100 fish between us 25% ranging between 2-9lb the average being 3-4lb and if we had caught all the fish that we had hooked we probably could have added another 30-40 larger fish to the total.  That was weird, the hooks seemed to be pulling for no reason.  This takes our total count for our last three outings to 564 fish between us that's an average of 94 fish each, per session. That's good fishing!!

SEPTEMBER

WINDMILL

On 21st Sept I headed for Swan lake for a short evening session. I decided to target the margins in front an overhanging tree. I baited up with sweetcorn both as feed and on the hook. I was tackled up with a 2.5lb tc rod and 10lb mainline to 10lb braided hooklength. Within half an hour I was connected to a turbo charged common carp. It put up a spirited fight and it was all I could do to keep it out of the snags both left and right of my swim. At 17lb 5oz it was a new pb for me. I must thank the angler a few swims along the bank who helped me with the photographs. Without him a record of my pb would not have been possible.

NOVEMBER

ARMIGERS

I regularly fish at Armigers Lakes, Thaxted during the summer, but believe that the best time to bag up there is during October and November.  I fished the bottom lake on Saturday 11th November from about 1.30 to 4.30pm.  It was a chilly afternoon, quite breezy but dry.  I fished the carp pole at about 6 to 7 metres from the adjoining bank about half way along with small carp pellets.  You can either use the skinned hookable type or band them.  The trick is to feed little and often to build up the swim and make the fish compete and the best part of fishing this time of year is that the rudd just don’t seem interested.  Anyhow I had over 100lb of carp between 2lb and 6lb and the bites were pretty much non stop.  Not bad for 3 hours fishing at this time of year and I’ll certainly be going back before the real cold weather sets in!

DECEMBER

WILLOW MERE

On the 24 December my friend and I decided to go the Willow Mere for the first time.  The plan was for some general fishing, along with a view to catching our first Pike.  Due to the recent cold spell, the fishing was very hard, and despite picking what we thought looked like promising swims, we were unable to locate the small fish which must have shoaled up tightly in the cold.  Late morning, I decided to have another walk around the lake for any activity.  I noticed groups of small roach topping in the far corner (shallow part) of the lake, which were obviously trying to avoid the attention of a pike.  I quickly returned to my original swim and moved my gear, and within 15 minutes of putting my roach deadbait in the water was into my first pike.  After a short fight, I landed my first Pike which weighed 8lb.  For those members who have not been to this venue, the water appears to have a good head of pike, as well as the carp and other species documented. I would like to pass on my thanks to the fishery officer for his advice and information on the fishery, which will be invaluable the next time we visit.

JANUARY

WILLOW MERE

Mr IAN FROST from Chelmsford travelled the short distance from his home to our Willow Mere water on New Year's Day and was successful in landing three carp on ledgered halibut pellets. Two commons of around 11 lbs were caught either side of a well-conditioned mirror of 18 lbs 8 oz which was weighed with the help of Fishery Officer Brian Thorpe and the only other person fishing the lake on the day, club Treasurer Derek Howard. The only reason Derek was there was that the spate conditions on the Club's River Roding stretch were too high for any success, and he moved the 10 miles to Willow Mere to avoid a blank. Ian found the fish obliging as the temperatures had risen after Christmas with the rain and wind, although fishing conditions on the 1st became colder. Derek had 30 small fish including some of the recently stocked stillwater chub. Despite a membership of nearly 4600, members will often find themselves alone on our waters in the winter, and many good fish are there for the catching if people watch the temperatures on preceding days.

HENNY STREET

After a near fruitless 2 and a half days pike fishing at Straits Mill in which I caught only one fish of just over 8lbs I rounded off the season's pike fishing with a trip to Henny Street on Saturday 10 March. The river condition and weather were perfect and the fishing lived up to expectations. I landed 5 pike in total with the biggest at 20lbs 9oz, 20lbs 6oz, and 14lbs 1oz. I also had smaller pike of 8.5lbs and a jack. A couple of missed runs and a couple of dropped runs as well made for a very entertaining day.

WINDMILL LAKES

The wife and I went to Windmill Lakes and fished Swan Lake on 26 March. It
was very hard fishing with nothing much happening apart from a few line
knocks. 7 hours later I had my first bite - a 6.5lb bream in very good
condition. This was followed 20 minutes later by a 9lb common carp with a
stubbed nose. The bream didn't put up much of a fight but the common did! It
didn't like having its photo taken either and was trying to get away (hence
the way I'm holding it!!).

All the wife caught was a sun tan!
